Tax Organizer
Chasing clients for missing documents is the slowest part of tax season. This tax organizer asks each client the year-end questions in one place: household changes, income types, deductions and credits, and a checklist of the documents you'll need. Edit the questions to match your practice, try it, then send each client a personal link with their name and tax year already filled in.

What is a tax organizer?
A tax organizer is a questionnaire a tax preparer sends clients before preparing their return. It asks what changed during the year, what income and deductions apply, and which documents to send, so the preparer starts with a complete picture.
When to use it
- At the start of tax season, before clients send documents.
- For new clients, alongside last year's return.
- When clients tend to send documents in several batches.
- When you want every client's answers in one sortable view.
What to include
Household changes
Marriage, divorce, dependents and moves affect the return.
Income types
A checklist is faster than open questions.
Deductions and credits
The common ones, plus "None".
Estimated payments
Easy to forget, so ask directly.
Document checklist
Ask which W-2s, 1099s and 1098s they'll send.
What to leave out
Don't ask clients to type Social Security numbers or bank account numbers into the form. Collect those through your tax software or secure portal.
Why FormSign
Import your client list and each client gets a personal link with their name and tax year filled in and locked. Every organizer lands as a row on your board, so you can filter by who has finished the organizer and who hasn't started yet. When the organizer is done, the same workflow can send your engagement letter for e-signature.
This template is a starting point, not legal or tax advice. Adjust the questions to your practice and the returns you prepare.
Questions
Can clients send their tax documents through the form?
Not yet. The organizer asks which documents they'll send; collect the files through your usual secure process.
Is this a printable PDF?
It's an online form. Answers land on your FormSign board.
Should I collect Social Security numbers here?
We recommend not. Use your tax software or secure client portal.
Can I pre-fill each client's name and tax year?
Yes. Import a spreadsheet and FormSign creates a personal link per client, with those fields locked.
Do I need an account to try it?
No. Open the template, edit it and test it. You'll create an account when you want to save and send it.
